RHAYADER Town Reserves increased their lead at the top of the Watson Financial Mid Wales League (South) to five points with a 5-1 success at Brecon Northcote.

Michael Fowlie netted twice for the Weirglodd men with Gareth Hughes, Dylan Jones and Paul Bishop completing the nap hand while Tom Jenkins bagged Northcote’s consolation.

Meanwhile at the other end of the table Builth Wells Reserves hauled themselves off the foot of the league with a 3-2 win at St Harmon.

Manager Graham Samuel and his young side were delighted as Alex James grabbed a late winner to sink the Swifts. For James, it was his second of the game with Alex Hicks also scoring for Builth while Aaron Bates, who had given St Harmon the lead, and Jimmy Goodwin kept the home side very much in contention.

Knighton Town Reserves are five points behind Rhayader but have three games in hand and the Robins maintained their challenge with a 2-0 win at border rivals, Newcastle. Max Lewis gave Knighton a first-half lead and Billy Hyett clinched the points after the break.

The day’s other local derby saw Carno Reserves triumph 2-0 at Llanidloes Town Reserves with goals from Paul Simpson and Andy Evans.
