Saints go marching in to round two

BRENDAN Hackett grabbed a hat-trick as Hay St Marys beat Builth Wells 5-1 in the Spar Mid Wales League Cup.

With Jack Biggs and Jordan Baker also on target while Joel Metcalf gained a consolation for Builth who were 4-0 down at half-time.

Penybont caused one of the shocks of the season by knocking Llandrindod Wells out of the Cup.

Struggling near the bottom of the Spar Mid Wales League second division, the men from The Racecourse stunned Llandrindod with goals from Tom Barr and Emrys Thomas while Johnny Williams converted a penalty for the Spa men.

Knighton Town swept into Round Two with a 6-0 win at arch rivals, Presteigne. Connor Bird, Mark Jones, Sam Williams, Danny Ives, Gareth Mansell and Dewi Allens shared the goals for the Robins while Presteigne’s misery was compounded by the sending off of Anthony Vernalls.

Newbridge failed to build on the previous week’s heroics crashing out 8-0 at home against waterloo Rovers for whom Neil Pryce and Andy Gwilt netted four apiece.

Elsewhere, Spar Division One leaders, Penrhyncoch progressed 4-1 at Aberystwyth University thanks to Josh Shaw, Jonathan Evans, Matt Mousley and Nathan warren. The students had led through Liam Powell but then had Sam Chapman sent off for deliberate handball.

Llanidloes eased thorugh 7-1 at Bettws with Charlie Proctor bagging a hat-trick and Ed Clarke, Harri Clarke, Ricky Litchfield and Sam Hamer also scoring for The Daffs. Iwan Matthews and Gary Merdith both completed hat-tricks as Llanrhaeadr won 8-1 at Four Crosses.

Ashley Owen netted twice as Carno went through 4-0 at Abermule while Ifan Burrell scored two in Bow Street’s 4-1 passage at Borth United.

In the one Spar Mid Wales League second division game last weekend, Radnor Valley moved into the top six with a 1-0 win at Dyffryn Banw thanks to a late strike from Elliot Morris.
