HAY St Marys lifted the Aspidistra Radnorshire Cup with a 4-2 victory over holders, Rhayader Town at Presteignene’s Llanandras Park last Friday night.

The Saints, who have had an excellent season in the Spar Mid Wales League first division, netted through Jack Biggs (2), Matt James and Rob Sneddon.

Hay took an early lead with top scorer, Biggs sweeping home a cross from close range. Both sides had chances but it was Dafydd Carruthers who levelled for Rhayader midway through the half.

The Saints were back in front in the second half with Matt James scoring at the far post but the midfielder turned hero to villain as he was shown a second yellow card by referee, Rob Evans.

But Rob Sneddo increased their lead as he jinxed past a couple of defenders to guide the ball past Luke Evans. Biggs added a fourth from Sneddon’s pass and although Mark Davies grabbed a consolation for Rhayader in stoppage time, it was Saints captain Stuart Davies who received the County Cup from sponsor, Mr Malcolm Eaton of the Aspidistra Restaurant.

Hay went on to land the Presteigne Otway Cup on Sunday with a 5-2 Final success against Kington Town. Brendan Hackett netted twice with Steve Morgan, Steve Goodwin and Jack Biggs also on target while Liam Jones bagged a brace for Kington.

And it was a super Sunday for Hay as their Reserve team had earlier in the day won the Alfred Sparey Cup after defeating Mid Wales League (South) rivals, Newcaste 3-2.

Kyle Harding grabbed Hay’s winner to add to earlier goals from Richard Lynes and Craig Forsyth.
