There was plenty of football action across Mid Wales last weekend, including a host of local teams in first round action in the FAW Amateur Trophy competition.

Kieran Dovey recorded the top individual feat of the day locally in the FAW Amateur Trophy with a four-goal haul as Knighton Town breezed into the second round with a 5-1 victory at Dyffryn Banw.

Midfielder Dovey made quite an impression with The Radnor Robins at the beginning of last season and he is carrying on in a similar vein. Jack Davies headed Knighton into an early lead at Banw with his first goal for the club and Dovey then took centre stage bagging a first half hat-trick. Alwyn Williams pulled a goal back for the hosts on the hour but any hopes of a fightback were ended as man-of-the-match, Dovey struck again for Knighton.

Our four Ardal League clubs are all safely through to Round Two with Brecon Corries, Builth Wells, Llandrindod Wells and Rhayader Town all progressing.

Rhayader notched their first win of the season triumphing 4-2 at Carno where two first half goals from new striker, Tai Jones put them in the driving seat. Carno threatened to turn the tie on it’s head with two goals of their own in as many minutes from Ioan Humphreys and Tyler McCarthy on the hour mark. But Sion Herman regained the lead for Rhayader before substitute, Bradley Goodwin ensured their passage.

Player-coach Robbie Nicholls scored twice as Llandrindod Wells pulled off a 3-1 win at Tywyn Bryncrug. Ashley Jones put the Spa men ahead before Tywyn saw Gwilym Jones sent off midway through the first half. Nicholls doubled the lead before half-time and sealed the tie with his second after Iwan Richards had reduced the deficit.

Lyndon Jones and Rudi Griffiths were on target as Builth Wells made it through with a hard fought 2-0 verdict at Machynlleth. Jones struck a minute before half-time after being out through by debutant, Tommy Rowlands. The Bulls saw the game out in the second half and Griffiths scored in stoppage time when he latched onto a Rhys Thomas header.

Brecon Corries saw off Cwmcarn Athletic 3-0 at The Rich Field where summer signing, Nathan Williams broke the deadlock with a free-kick two minutes before half-time. Joel Evans headed a second in first half stoppage time and the returning Paul Keddle completed the win with just over an hour played with Corries well in control.

Radnor Valley and Presteigne St Andrews are however out of the competition. Radnor gave a good account of themselves holding higher graded Dolgellau to a goalless draw at The Bypass before bowing out on penalties while Presteigne were beaten 5-1 at home by Tregaron. Dylan Davies and Rhodri Jones gave Tregaron a two goal interval lead but Henry Shaw raised Presteigne hopes. It was not to be however as Jac Hockenhull regained Tregaron’s two goal advantage before a late Ryan Davies double ended the tie.

Talgarth Town are still seeking their first points of the season following a 4-1 defeat at Aberaeron in the MMP Central Wales League South.

With Talgarth having played three and lost three and Aberaeron played four and lost four prior to Saturday, it was a big game on the coast and it was the hosts who came out on top.

Talgarth had started well and led through a trademark Rob Evans header at half-time. Ryan Jenkins levelled for Aberaeron on the hour and Ianto Evans put them ahead from the penalty spot. A second penalty converted by Steff Evans left Talgarth with too much to do and heads dropped as Ianto Evans netted again in stoppage time.

Hay St Marys’ unbeaten start to the season has been recognised with Gareth Jenkins being named Central Wales League South manager of the Month for August while the Player of the Month award goes to Jack Biggs.

In the Central Wales League North, Kerry’s Ben Davies is Manager of the Month and Barmouth striker, Paul Lewis the Player of the Month.

St Harmon kicked off their Watson Financial Mid Wales League (South) campaign with a hard earned 2-1 home success over Felindre.

For the visitors, it was a case of not being able to keep up with the Jones’s as Jacob Jones and Jeff Jones gave The Swifts a two-goal lead before new signing, Arron Davies pulled one back for Felindre.

Jacob Jones opened the scoring with a first half free-kick and his namesake added he second with a strike from the edge of the box.

Felindre refused to roll over throughout the match and were very much in the game when Davies, who has joined from Knighton Town, reduced the arrears.

Hay St Marys Reserves were in seventh heaven on Friday night after kicking off with a 7-1 home success over Presteigne St Andrews Reserves.

Darren Horrigan’s early opener for The Saints was cancelled out by Presteigne’s Nathan Allen but captain, Horrigan, Aaran Mills and Robin Davies took Hay into a 4-1 half-time lead.

Davies extended the lead with his second of the night before substitute, Craig Jones struck twice to complete the win.

It was a good day all round for Llandrindod Wells on Saturday while as their first team were making progress in the FAW Amateur Trophy, the Reserves notched an impressive 4-0 win at Llanfair United in the FAW National Reserve League Central.

The Spa youngsters scored twice in each half with Paul McCambridge and George Lloyd on target in the first half and Morgan Margetts (pen) and Sam Ryland in the second to make it back to back wins.

Rhayader Town crashed to a 6-1 defeat at Penrhyncoch where Harry Jones completed a hat-trick for The Roosters.

Jones (2) and Steff Gittins (2) saw Penrhyn race into a four goal lead before Aaron Bates pulled one back for Rhayader from the penalty spot. But Jones struck again after the break with substitute, Carwyn Davies completing the tally.

Bow Street are nine points clear at the top of the table although they have played more games than their rivals after a 7-2 victory over Welshpool Town on Sunday.

Lee Crumpler netted four times and Bryn Oliver, Harri Roberts and Llion Edwards were also on target with Tom Halliday and Ethan Kinsey replying for Welshpool.
