A GLORIOUS day greeted the players for the Texas Scramble Open on Sunday, May 8, with 128 golfers from clubs from South Wales and beyond playing in the first Mens Open Competition at Cradoc.
The weather was fantastic, the views superb and the course was in fantastic condition. Compliments were given to the greens staff for producing the course to the standard especially after the heavy winter.
As with all Texas Scrambles the scores were expected to be exceptional and this was no exception, the winners had a very good score making it 11 under par before their handicap allowance pipping second place by a mere 0.2.
Results: - First: Gross 60 - Nett 55.8 - Cradoc -Allan Smith, Matt Gardner, Craig Samuel and Sam Hammond; Second: Gross 62 - Nett 56 - Neath & Potadawe - A Lewis, K Evans, R Arnold and K Jones; Third: Gross 59 - Nett 57.2 - Forest Hills - N Jones, J Neil, M Buris and T Roberts. There were 10 Titleist NXT’s for 2’s.
Although the sun was shining the wind was keen making it feel a fair bit colder than it looked, it was also playing across the course which made scoring a bit tricky in the mid week stableford on May 4.
With these difficult conditions the winning score was above par for the course but because the Course Standard Scratch was raised to 73 it meant the top two both had their handicaps adjusted accordingly.
Results:- First: Chris Connoly (h’cap 9) 35 points (on back 9); Second: Roger Jones (h’cap 9) 35 points; Third: John Bevan (h’cap 7) 34 points. Six Callaway Supersets for 2’s.
The Ladies were blessed with a beautiful day for the Golden Jubilee Cup on May 5.
The sun shone and there was hardly any wind to contend with which made being out on the course an absolute joy.
Sharon and Steph both produced fine rounds, carding a two under par (Nett) score with Sharon just pipping Steph with a better back nine. After basking in the sun on the course the ladies decided to make the most of the day by relaxing on the patio for refreshments and a post round chat.
Results:- First: Sharon Roberts - Nett 70 (on back 9); Second: Steph Jenkins - Nett 70; Third: Judith Davies - Nett 74.
