THE Mid Wales Alliance couldn’t have had a more stunning day to visit Cradoc when 172 golfers from across Mid Wales converged at the club to play golf in the most perfect conditions.

The sun was bright in the sky all day and that coupled with the back drop of the Brecon Beacons it was still an enjoyable day even if the golf was not up to scratch.

A special mention was made in the speeches for the hard work of the greens staff for the way the course was presented, it was in great condition and a fair but firm test of golf. With the playing conditions benign and the course looking fantastic it was no surprise to see low scores on the leader board.

Having held the lead for most of the day Derek Osbourne and James Davenport, who were in the second group out in the morning were dropped into second place by ex member Gareth Davies and C Lloyd who had a better count back on the last nine holes, both teams on a very respectful 42 points.

With three points between the top eight a lot of officiating was needed to separate the teams into their final places, a big thanks goes out to the organiser and officials for making the competition run smoothly.

Results: First: Gareth Davies and C Lloyd - Builth - 42 points; Second: Derek Osborne and James Davenport - Cradoc - 42 points; Third: C Jones and R Williams - Welshpool - 41 points; Fourth: Les Gwynne and Spencer Cleaves - Cradoc - 40 points; Fifth: J Williams and V Owen - Welshpool - 39 points; Sixth: T Davies and A Evans - Builth - 39 points; Seventh: L Bullock and Field - 39 points; Eighth: A Davies and M Jones - Cilgwyn - 39 points.

A glorious day greeted the Ladies who came to play Cradoc in the first of this years Ladies Opens last Thursday. 54 players from across South Wales came and found the course in great condition, a special mention for the green staff who are working very hard to keep the course looking superb.

With the fairways running fast, the greens putting smooth and with three attempts at the same shot scores were expected to be low, with the winning score at 7.3 under par the winners took advantage of their local knowledge and produced a fine round to claim the title.

The competition was close with the top four only being separated by a shot and a half and the third and fourth places were decided over the back nine holes.

Those that played in the midweek competition must have been gluttons for punishment last Wednesday as it was their second medal in a couple of days although it didn’t seem to deter the Chairman of Golf.

His level par round was good enough for him to win the competition beating Spencer into second place on the count back over the back nine holes, Spencer must be in good from as this was his second runners up spot in the matter of a few days.
