The Welsh women’s hockey team head into their final Commonwealth Games group game against Malaysia aiming to clinch a third place finish in their pool.
Defeat to South Africa on Monday morning ended Welsh hopes of finishing in the top two to take a semi-final spot but victory against winless Malaysia would see Wales end the group stage in third position.
Wales would then be able to play for fifth position overall in the placing games against the teams from pool B who also finished outside of the semi-final places.
Despite the disappointment of missing out on a semi-final Wales will still consider the games a success as they entered the tournament ranked 26th in the world, the lowest in their group, and second lowest ranked team overall.
Malaysia have so far only got a draw against South Africa to show for their efforts on the Gold Coast.
While a win would seal third place a draw could see Wales finish fourth and defeat would mean Wales finish bottom of the group.
In the placing games Wales will face either Scotland, Canada or Ghana, the only team in the tournament below them in the world rankings.England, who suffered the one loss to India, won the group and the Indians defeated South Africa 1-0 to make sure they took second spot and the other semi-final place.
Wales' game against Malaysia starts at 12.30am UK time.
Forward Phoebe Richards, from Knighton, could win her 89th cap against Malaysia while defender Delyth Thomas, from Llanfihangel Nant Bran, near Brecon, is also in the squad.
