Wales’ women’s hockey team have pulled off one of the shocks of the Commonwealth Games - beating India who are ranked 16 places above them.
Phoebe Richards from Knighton starred for Wales in the 3-2 victory in the opening game of the hockey tournament.
The forward gave a lively performance to keep the Indian defence on their toes and was fouled for the penalty which gave Wales a two goal lead by half time.
Sian French converted from the spot after Richards was fouled while Lisa Daley had opened the scoring to put world number 10 India on warning of an upset.
In the third period India clawed their way back with goals from Rani and Nikki Pradhan.
However Natasha Marke-Jones scored a late winner to secure Wales its first victory over a team ranked in the world top 10 for the first time in more than 30 years.
Former Brecon Hockey Club player Delyth Thomas, from Llanfihangel Nant Bran, started on the bench but the 19-year-old was called into action as a rolling substitute to make her games debut.
Wales women are next in action tomorrow, Friday, against England in a game that starts at 10.30am UK time.
England won their opener, against South Africa, 2-0.
