There were plenty of good performances from Brecon Athletics Club athletes over the weekend at the Welsh Championships in Newport.
U13, U17 and U20 athletes took part at the event, which saw more than 450 athletes come together in competition. Very windy conditions were not conducive to track personal bests but Welsh Championship medals and titles were up for grabs.
On Saturday there were bronze medals for Tristan Cumberland (U20 - 1500m) and Ruby Herdman (U17 - 1500Sc) with personal best times for Joe Murphy (U17 - 1500Sc) and Toby Bennett (U17 - 1500Sc). John Bennett unfortunately missed out on both in a very wet high jump competition and Dan Ricketts had to withdraw from the 400H after a warm up niggle.
On Sunday there was an U20 800m track title for Jack Organ, and U13 gold (javelin) and silver (discus) on an excellent day for Sam Corbett. John Bennett attended for a second day and won a bronze at triple jump. In the U13 high jump Rosie Bald cleared the same height as second but the countback system meant that she finished fifth - still a great performance.
There is a selection meeting soon for the U20 international in two weeks’ time. With a Welsh Schools and Welsh Athletics team taking part Jack and Tristan look sure to be selected.
