BRECON Lions Club held the ‘Brecon Lions 10-Mile Road Race’ on Sunday, August 6.
Fortunately it was a lovely, dry day which led to quite a few entries on
the day.
Altogether there were 257 finishers.
The winner was Philip Mathews (Swansea Harriers) in a time of 53 minutes 23 seconds. A fantastic time. Daniel Desta (Swansea Harriers) came second in 56 minutes 6 seconds and behind him in third place was Richard Jackson-Hookins (Penarth & Dinas).
1st lady runner home was Katie Beecher (Les Croupiers) in a time of 1 hour 6 minutes 25 seconds. Second Lady home was Eloise Crowley in 1 hour 8 minutes and 3 seconds with third place woman going to Elizabeth Tremlett (Carmarthen Harriers) in a time of 1 hour 9 minutes 43 seconds.
The last runner home finished in 2 hours 11 minutes 20 seconds.
The first man to finish from Brecon AC was veteran runner Peter Sowerby who came 23rd overall in a time of 1: 06.49 and was the first male in the 50-55 category.
The route had been changed this year and several remarked that they liked the new course.
All runners must be congratulated on a superb effort with many achieving excellent personal best results on a difficult course.
Brecon Lions Club are indebted to all the marshals and helpers and a special thanks to several people who were ‘roped’ in to help at the last minute.
All runners received a medal and a yellow ‘T’ shirt as a memento.
The first three home in both the Men and Women received a Gold and Silver Salver which was engraved.
To enable family members, not running the main race, an organised ‘Fun Run’ around the Penlan running track of 2 miles (8 laps) was fitted in.
All competitors completed the course before the main event runners returned to the track.
There were many new entrants to the main event and comments were passed on how enjoyable and beautiful the scenery was.
Our grateful thanks for those volunteers who helped with marshalling, timekeeping, recording and distribution of competitors running numbers.
Runners complimented the marshals out on the course for their help and friendliness.
Brecon Lions Club have raised considerable funds from this event which will go to our Club Charity Account.
This money will benefit our local charitable needs.
