IN the four mile race of the Brecon Rotary/Brecon AC road race series it was a newcomer to the series Huw Evans, a Monmouth Boys schoolteacher running for Les Croupiers, who won relatively convincingly.

M40 Huw was helped by the non-appearance of the Aberdare trio who took each of the podium places at the three mile race but looked like he would have got in among them if they had been there.

Huw’s winning time of 21.22 was almost a minute ahead of Builth’s Tim Iveson (SM) who was 45 seconds behind M50 Austin Davies who has often thwarted Huw at cross country but is just returning to training after the lambing season.

Former Brecon AC runner Chris Prothero (Blaenau Gwent) was fourth followed by two Parc Bryn Bach racers which showed that again, the number of runners from slightly further afield was up again. The total turnout was 119 which holds up very well against previous years.

The first senior lady to finish was once again Llanfrynach’s own Katie Roby (15, 26.02) followed closely by two other ladies Kelly Morgan (Aberdare) and Emma Matthews (Builth).

Other notable performances were Tom and Beth Wood making it a family double as they won both U20 categories as well as M60 Phil Miles (Parc Bryn Bach) winning his category in an excellent time of 27.16.

Earlier in the evening the 1.5 mile fun run again had a good turnout significantly up on 2015 and earlier years. The front end results were the same as 2 weeks earlier with Lloyd Jones and Jack Organ being the leading boys a little ahead of Tiegan Ward and Lili Jones who were the first girls.

All of the runners got a lot of positive support and there were plenty of smiling faces and just a few grimaces.

The final race takes place on Tuesday June 7 with the fun run at 6.45pm and the five mile race at 7.15pm.
