A former member of Brecon Athletics Club has won three bronze medals at a powerlifting championships in New Zealand.

Caitlin Davies, who previously threw the hammer at Brecon Athletics Club, went to Auckland last month to take part in various powerlifting events at the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships - clinching three bronze medals.

Representing Wales, she achieved all of this in remarkable fashion, having broken her humerus bone only seven months ago during a competition in Nottingham, leaving her a doubt for the championships altogether.

After stunning the competition, Caitlin, who her coach claims has tremendous potential, is now focused on the World and European Championships respectively, as she aims to recreate her New Zealand heroics.

Caitlin said: “I’ll be competing in the next national competitions and trying to get sponsors, and then I should be competing hopefully at World or European Championships after that.”

When quizzed on her ambitions for the respective competition, Caitlin was optimistic about her chances, saying: “Yeah, hopefully, I’m on the podium, at it again.”

The Brecon & Radnor Express also spoke to her mum Tracie, who was incredibly proud of her daughter’s achievements, which saw her set three personal bests throughout the championships.

She was keen to stress what the sport of powerlifting did for her daughters’ mental health.

Tracie Jones-Davies said: “She is still in shock as she broke her humerus bone in April.

“It has done the world for her mental health, she went to University in Covid and they were confined to barracks really, so there was a lot of stress there and it has now given her something to focus on.”
