THE DG Jones Agri Ltd. Powys Lanes Rally organised by Epynt Motor Club took place last November.

The road rally was based on the Royal Welsh Showground, from where 75 crews started a 120 mile route at just before midnight. The highlight of the first half saw the crews head through Abergwesyn to tackle the infamous Devil’s Staircase and around Llyn Brianne Reservoir. After a halfway halt in Llandovery, the second half started under the scenic backdrop of Cynghordy viaduct. From there the crews headed through Halfway, Pont Faen and Merthyr Cynog before returning to Builth.

The overall winners were Kevin Davies and Dale Bowen (pictured courtesy of JMS Photographic) in a Ford Escort MKII, who made it a hat trick after winning the event twice previously.

Gerwyn Jones of DG Jones Agri Ltd, who has generously sponsored the event since it first ran in 2011, said ‘The Powys Lanes Rally has donated money to charities and local causes every year. This year we are able to donate £2,000, which brings the donations over the last eight years to a very impressive total of £11,920.’

This year, it was decided by the rally committee to make donations to The Bracken Trust Cancer Centre and Credu Powys Young Carers. Representatives from the charities attended a presentation evening held recently to receive a cheque for £1000 each. The Old Forge Garage Mewla Rally, also organised by Epynt Motor Club, similarly donated £500 to the Bracken Trust.

Reg Cawthorne, chairman of The Bracken Trust, said ‘We were absolutely delighted to receive cheques to the value of £1,500 from Epynt Motor Club. We are very grateful to the rally organisers and competitors for all their hard work in raising this money, which will be put to very good use supporting people affected by cancer at the Bracken Trust.’

Becky Evans, Young Carers team leader, said ‘Thank you on behalf of Credu and all the young people for this very kind donation. The young people will be the ones to instruct us how they would like to spend the money, but rest assured it will be so appreciated and very welcome from everyone! These young people are amazing and are always putting others first so it is so nice that they are given this wonderful gift.’

Clerks of the course, Ceri Davies and Jamie Pickup, added: ‘The committee would like to thank all residents and landowners along the rally route for their co-operation in the running of the event, to enable us to support fundraising efforts in the local community.’
