This Sunday will see top UK rally drivers from across the country descend on the Epynt Military Ranges for a day of intense competition at the Old Forge Garage Mewla Rally.
This year’s rally is geared up to be a bumper showing, with organisers overwhelmed after receiving 100 entries for the event.
The popularity of this year’s event has resulted in a reserve list being formed - just the second time in over 20 years that this has been necessary.
The day, organised by Epynt Motor Club, will feature almost 20 different makes of cars, from Ford to Proton, including Hillman, Talbot, Darrien and Triumph, competing across ten different stages, including fantastic spectator locations to watch the event safely.
Melvyn Evans, the reigning Mewla Champion, will be pushing his Volkswagen Polo R5 to the limit to keep Builth-based Jason Pritchard of his heels in his Focus and father/daughter team Damien and Charly Cole in the Skoda Fabia R5 from taking his crown.
Damien Cole is currently tied with John Price with six overall wins of the event, so a win will see him win the event outright a total of seven times, which he has been denied since the event had to be cancelled in 2020.
However, it is the MG Metro 6R4 that reigns supreme with eight outright wins on the event, although sadly there are none entered this year. Ford’s manufacturer title with 13 outright wins is safe - only time will tell if any of the Escorts entered can beat modern machinery and make it a 14th win.
Bob Fowden in his Subaru Impreza WRC will start the event for the 28th time this year, hoping to gain crucial points on this year’s JD Competition Tyres Welsh Tarmacadam Championship as he currently trails second.
Being the final round of the Promotive Engineering Group King of Epynt Challenge, Damien and Charly Cole will be keeping on it, to ensure that second co-driver in the Championship and Epynt Motor Club member Jon Hawkins doesn’t take the points needed to win the co-driver title with Kevin Tappin in the Darrien T90.
This year the organisers are pleased to be working with Carbon Positive Motorsport, to encourage competitors and spectators to offset their carbon emissions from this year’s event.
Carbon Positive Motorsport are offering a unique discount code associated with the event (MR22CS) for use on their website carbonpositivemotorsport.com - all you need to do is input how many litres of diesel or petrol use have used, with prices starting as low as 14p per litre.
This promises to be a great day out competing or watching, with the action starting from 9:30am on the ranges.
Spectator information will be available from Llywel entrance at £10 a programme.
Further details including the full entry list can be found at www.epyntmc.co.uk.
