BRECON RFC has nominated Andy Lewis for the Peter’s Real Welsh Rugby Hero Award 2016.
A serious rugby injury ended his playing career and yet Andy returned as a charismatic and enthusiastic, leader, worker and organiser. He has overcome adversity and is respected by the whole Club (8– 80years) and the wider community.
Ron Rowsell, Secretary Assistant at Brecon RFC said: "Andy has and is making a huge contribution to every section of the club. He was a talented player and when that chapter of his life came to a close, some 20 years ago, he returned as a coach and administrator.
"Working within the Mini/Junior Section of the Club, he continues to be an inspirational figure. He helped the Section to increase its playing numbers. He set achievable goals and engendered a sense of fair play, enjoyment, fun and pride in themselves, in their team and in the Club as a whole."
As part of his involvement in the Mini and Junior Section Andy has been a prime mover behind the highly successful annual Brecon Mini Tournament. Now in its 10 year the tournament has gone from strength to strength, attracting ten teams in each of five year groups (Under 7’s to Under 11’s) and catering for in the region of 700 young players accompanied by parents and supporters.
Ron commented: "Much of this success has been due to Andy’s administrative skills and the ease with which he communicates with individuals and groups.
"Not content to confine his efforts to the younger elements of the club he has served on the general committee with particular responsibility for marketing, sponsorship and the development and implementation of a Club Vision. What he has achieved in these roles has been nothing other than remarkable.
"He prepares the weekly match programme, co-administers and develops the Club Website, co-edits a quarterly Club Newsletter, accesses and liaises with sponsors and is the individual that everyone turns to when they want something done."
When the award was first discussed Ron said there was only one person who Brecon RFC thought of, and that was Andy.
"Andy deserved to be recognised for his work ethic, engaging personality and commitment to the sport and Club, which he loves dearly."
Ron added: "The only person, within the Club and the community, who does not see what a central role he plays in the life of the Club, is Andy himself. Everything is done for the Club and never for self-praise or reward.
"He is modest and would never have consented to be put forward for this award if it hadn’t been pointed out that he was doing this to benefit players, young and old, members and supporters."
