Gwernyfed 23 Treherbert 3..

GWERNYFED entertained Treherbert at Trefecca Road for the first time in many years and came away with a hard earned victory which secured a much needed four try five point bonus win victory.

The first twenty minutes were evenly matched with both sides pressing hard and only a well organised defence by the home side kept the visitors at bay as their larger pack tested the Gwernyfed side.

On the quarter a line out 30 metres out was secured and the home eight marched their opponents backwards for number eight Steve Harley to emerge as the try scorer.

Within minutes, on their next visit, Gwernyfed were awarded a scrum and the same man notched his second try with a powerful push over scrum. Both tries went unconverted and with Treherbert securing good line out ball it was only some good pressure in the tackle that stopped them.

When a ball was spilt in the home 25, young fullback Lewis Cooke spotted the gap and set off, interlinking with centre Zack Snape and it was left winger Andy Hill who was on hand to take the scoring pass to record his sides third try as the first half ended.

Treherbert turned round 15-0 down and soon found their cause hindered when a skirmish developed and the referee singled out one of their forwards for an early bath.

Despite being down a man they took the game to Gwernyfed with their number eight and scrum half always a threat, they were next on the scoreboard to reduce the arrears with a penalty.

As the game wore on Gwernyfed, with Cooke always elusive at fullback, launched several exiting attacks, young winger Jack Williams showed his pace but was denied by good cover tackling as they thwarted the home sides desire for the fourth bonus point try.

Gwernyfed did not help themselves when two men were sent to the bin for 10 minutes as the game closed.

With time running out another break out of defence saw Man of the Match Williams scorch up the touch line with a thunderous tackle by the Treherbert open side flanker.

His home opposite number Sam Stephens was on hand to pop the ball up to scrum half Nathan Roberts who at full tilt took the ball and tore up the line to score a fantastic team try in the corner. This was enough to secure the much needed extra point much to the delight of the home support.

This week sees the return fixture as Gwernyfed travel to Treherbert for the rearranged game at the "Cage" and despite their twenty point margin this week will have their work cut out as they seek another win to help climb up the league.

This Saturday also sees the clubs maturer players the Veteran Rooster side travel to Dinas Powis as the clubs seventeenth representative side to don their shirts this season. Both matches being early kick offs.
