WRU NATIONAL LEAGUE DIVISION 1 EAST
Brecon 71 Ynysybwl 7
THREE pairs of brothers ran out for Brecon RFC in their convincing home victory over Ynysybwl.
Ioan and Dafydd Edwards, in the back and row and on the wing respectively, have played together in each first team match this season and on Saturday club captain, and number eight, Ewan Williams was joined in the side by younger brother, lock, Owain.
Completing the set of brothers were forwards Ryan and younger brother Jonathan.
The band of brothers had been itching to run out at Parc de Pugh as the flooding and heavy rain the previous Saturday had meant an enforce lay off for unbeaten Brecon.
Visitors, Ynysybwl, must have felt that they were still in the middle of Storm Callum as they were swamped by a rampant Brecon team. In stark contrast to the previous week, conditions were perfect for running rugby with the warm autumn sun shining on a pristine surface.
Brecon’s backs had a field day with a good supply of ball and scored nine of the team’s eleven tries, with the back three of Jake Crockett, Mike Powell and Dafydd Edwards claiming seven.
At outside half Dean Gunter was the master tactician. He kicked out of hand beautifully and converted eight of the eleven tries but it was his vision and distribution skills which created opportunities for those out wide.
Alongside him, at inside centre, was Sam Campbell who was a rock in defence, a threat with ball in hands.
However, his greatest strength, on the day, was recognising Brecon’s superiority out wide and making himself the important link which allowed the ball to move into the wide spaces.
Campbell’s centre partner Cameron Gardener got Brecon’s first touchdown early on and added a second.
Ynysybwl didn’t respond until almost an hour, when Brecon had already amassed 50 points, but did so with an excellent try as they broke out from their 22 to score under the Brecon posts.
Brecon responded with tries from props Howell Morgan, who received an ovation for his try, and Richie Davies.
Wing Mike Powell completed the scoring for Brecon who are next in action, at home on Saturday, October 27, against Llanharan in the second round of the WRU Plate.
