A BUILTH select XV played Mid Wales Barbarians on Boxing Day to raise money for the family affected by the Llangammarch Wells fire tragedy.

Players from Gwernyfed, Llandrindod, Brecon, Knighton and Rhayader turned up to make up the Barbarians team.

Andy Powell, the ex-British Lions and Wales player, turned up to play for the Barbarians, making a grand entrance. His tongue-in-cheek arrival on a golf buggy paid homage to an infamous incident in 2010 when he was caught ‘drunk in charge’ of a golf buggy on the M4 while celebrating Wales’ 31-24 victory over Scotland.

The final score in the game on Saturday was 36-12 to the Barbarians with Barbarians scrum half Mac Williams chosen as man of the match

Builth’s scorers in the game were Paul Griffiths and Tom Garner.

A large crowd watched the match and then followed to the club to watch an arm wrestling tournament which was eventually won by Kyle Hopkins. The last fundraising event of the day was an auction which in itself made over £1,000. A special mention should go to Gwernyfed RFC as they held a pantomime the weekend before and donated £125 from their proceeds. The match was a massive show of community spirit from not just Builth Rugby club but everyone locally who has pulled together to show their support towards the family.

Special thanks to the players, everyone who helped out and to everyone who donated items for the auction. The event was organised by Jeremy Pugh.
