Crickhowell RFC 45 v Hollybush RFC 3
In their second game of the New Year Crickhowell took on Hollybush RFC at Parc Broyd on Saturday. The home team set out their stall early and the first foray into the Hollybush 22 saw prop Andy Nicholls secure the ball and crash over the line for an unconverted try. Not long afterwards a clever cross-field kick saw a Hollybush mishandle the ball and matt Botting seized the ball and ran in another try , this time under the posts, and Tom Keane converted.
Crickhowell’s third try of the half came about when Tom keane cleared the ball upfield from his own 22. Speedy wing Tony Perry gave chase and gained possession of the ball, ran on and passed infield to scrum-half Richard Roberts who made good yardage before looping the ball out to Harry Summers playing at full-back who ran in the try for Tom Keane to successfully convert. Summers was in action again a little later when he gathered a cross-field kick and made his way upfield. He offloaded the ball skilfully to Matt Botting who evaded opponents and passed back to Summers who ran in under the posts, keane again converting. It was left to prop Andy Nicholls to complete the first half with his second try of the game leaving the score 31-0 at the half-time whistle.
In the second half it was Hollybush who had the majority of possession, thereby thwarting much of the home team’s endeavours but who unfortunately struggled to stay in touch with the scoreline. It was wing Tony Perry who was instrumental in setting up Crick's first try of the half after a repeat of his earlier efforts in securing the ball after a kick ahead, gaining ground and passing infield to Tom Keane who ran between the sticks and converted his own try. Shortly afterwards Rhodri Boggust was heading for glory having crossed the line and heading for the posts but an alert and speedy defender put in a tackle which knocked the ball out of his hands before he could touch down. Hollybush scored their only points of the game from a penalty not long after but it was the Parc Broyd outfit who had the final say when tom Keane once again scored and converted, leaving the final score 45-3.
The game was sponsored by David Schofield, of the Miracles Centre for Inner Peace. Next week Crickhowell have an away fixture at Cwmcarn United.
