Despite most fixtures being cancelled because of the snow, Crickhowell’s pitch was fine on Saturday for the visit of Crumlin RFC to Parc Broyd.
The home side were first on the scoreboard after a well-weighted kick ahead by Tom Keane saw Matt Botting read the bounce, and finish in style.
Crumlin soon struck back, however, after a series of missed tackles allowed them to power through.
They were unlucky with the conversion, which struck the crossbar and a missed penalty later in the half. A penalty for offside, kicked by Keane, saw the half-time score stand at 10-5. The second half, for the most part, belonged to Crick with a further three tries. The first was a well-worked move from a scrum when the ball was flicked out to Harry Summers, who burst through under the posts.
The second came from the hard-working Keanu Morris, who finished off a kick ahead from scrum-half Richard Roberts. It was Roberts who gained the bonus-point try who intercepted the ball after a scrum and ran though unopposed.
Keane’s kicking was on form and he converted all four tries. Crumlin never let their heads drop and their efforts were rewarded with a try in the last move of the game.
The Crick forwards put in a fine performance against a largely heavier pack, with the likes of Guy Solomon and Sion Windebank giving their all.
The club would like to thank match-sponsor Penny Industrial Services and David Sharpe and Jeremy Hill-Cannan for sponsoring the ball.
The previous week saw the club involved in a local derby when they took on Abergavenny Quins in the first round of Pontypool and District’s Ivor Jones Cup in a match sponsored by Giles Davies Ltd. In a close game which saw Crick trailing by 8 points to 10.
The second half saw them score another two tries to gain the lead and the Quins were unlucky to just score one, leaving the final score at Crick 18 Abergavenny Quins 15. Try-scorers for Crick were Kenny Birch, Lewis Tucker and Matt Botting with Tom Keane adding a penalty.
The club’s next league fixture is on Saturday, February 16 when they travel down to take on Rogerstone RFC.
