Senghenydd 36 Brecon 31.

BRECON travelled to the Welfare Ground last Saturday where they came home dejected after Senghenydd fought back.

Brecon completely dominated in the start of the game with their scrum regularly driving the home side off the ball and they made life difficult for them at the line out. With the wind at their backs the game was played exclusively in the home 22.

After small errors delaying the first try, when it did come it was well deserved. Brecon drove Senghenydd off their own ball and No eight Ewan Williams went blind.

He linked with his backs and Gari Davies crossed for a try which Jake Newman converted.

Following the re-start Brecon quickly returned to the home 22. Some good handling moves looked like creating a further score only for Gari Davies to be brought down a few metres short of the line.

As the ball came out of the breakdown the only person to spot it was the home right wing who picked it up and raced away covering the full 100 metres to score.

Brecon were then caught on their own ten metre line and penalised at the breakdown. They were slow to react to a quickly taken penalty and the home side backs made the most of the disorganised defence and swept the ball first to the right and then left before scoring in the corner.

This gave Brecon a warning and a lovely flat pass put Eifiion Jones through for a try under the posts and then shortly after Jonathan James barged his way over from short range for another. With Newman converting both scores, Brecon built up an 11 point lead.

After this productive pattern of play it was a surprise to see Brecon revert to previous tactics but they did produce a beautiful try.

Off an advancing scrum, Ewan Williams broke down the narrow side before moving the ball on to scrum half Daniel Edwards. He exchanged passes with right wing Joey Morgan before the final pass put him away and clear. Newman converted and gave Brecon an 18 point lead.

Just before the break, they conceded a critical soft try. The kick off failed to go 10 metres giving away a penalty and despite regaining possession, wing Joey Morgan was caught and the home side picked up the lose ball and sprinted to the line reducing Brecon’s lead to 11.

Following the break, scrums became uncontested and Brecon believed they could run out of defence and it wasn’t long before Senghenydd reduced the arrears.

The home scrum half spotted a gap and he scampered through the hole and linked with his centre who scored the try, which was converted.

The gap was now only four points and Brecon earned a penalty. The score gave them some hope but Eifion Jones was forced to leave the pitch with injury. This was made worse by the loss of wing Joey Morgan and captain Dafydd Thomas who was shown a yellow card.

The home side capitalised and their centre cut through the middle and scored leaving the home team just two points behind. In the last 10, Senghenydd worked their way up field and with the last play of the afternoon game their right wing just enough space to squeeze in at the corner which was converted.
