Gwernyfed’s visit to Cardiff was the only fixture to take place in the league over the weekend and victory moved the Green and Blacks up to third in the table.
The Talgarth-based side has enjoyed an unbeaten run over the past four months and opened the scoring at Llandaff when full back Gegs Williams slotted over a penalty.
Gareth Dodd’s boot put the visitors deep in opposition territory from where prop Craig Parry was able to crash over from a driving line out to extend the lead to 0-8.
Despite a lowly league position Llandaff always looked dangerous behind and when a looped pass opened a gap it was their centre who canterd over.
The home side spurned the opportunity to take they lead when they failed to convert penalties into points.
However whenever the line is near the Gwernyfed forwards are a real handful and a surge from broken play saw flanker Craig Fuller touchdown for a converted try. As the half closed Llandaff bagged a penalty to close the gap.
A last ditch tackle prevent the influential Fuller from opening the second half scoring from a powerful charge to the line but scrum half Lewis Cook cooly dug the ball out and supporting second row Jordan Curran plunged over on the blindside.
As the game entered the final quarter Llandaff pressed and deservedly scored a blindside try by their own second row to close the gap to seven points however Gwernyfeds defence held firm and Williams slotted another penalty to extend the lead with the game finishing 23-13 in Gwernyfed’s favour.
The Athletic entertained Caerleon Helmets in an exiting game running out winners by 31-27.
Youngsters were again on the score sheet, fitness again outlasting the heavier visiting side. Gethin Williams notched another try with young centre Will Lloyd touching down twice and also adding four conversions and a penalty to pip the Newport area side. Returning after a long injury full back Gethin Jones scored the other try.
This Saturday Gwernyfed again travel to Cardiff, to take on Old Illtydians, in an early kick-off due to the Wales V France international.
