GWERNYFED 1sts welcomed Treherbert to Trefecca Road last Saturday but the away side took the spoils with a last minute penalty in an entertaining game.

Gwernyfed were first on the score sheet with a try from hooker Scott Parry the first of two for the Cwmdu man. The score fluctuated back and forth but winger Andy Hill squeezed over in the corner and a strong performance again by the forwards saw Treherbert buckle under pressure with the referee awarding a penalty try.

Despite securing the bonus point with a fourth try throughout the game, a large amount of penalties were given away by the home side and the Treherbert outside half landed four kicks to complement the two conversions attempted with a personal tally of 16 points from the boot.

Having dominated the lineout and securing good field position as seen before discipline can lose you the game and is something that needs to be tightened this week as they visit Cardiff side Pentwrch. Having seen five points taken away in the dying seconds there was some consolation in securing two points. Final Score 24-26.

On the adjoining pitch the Athletic fielding returning try scoring youngsters Matty Meredith, Rab Smith, Adam Morgan and Tom Lloyd were much fitter than the visiting Hartridge side and with centre Mike Jones also notching up tries and conversions in a solid performance eased to a 47-0 victory.

Sunday Morning saw a large crowd attend for the much anticipated Blues cup match against visiting Rumney Cardiff for the clubs promising U12s side.

In a cracker of a game played on the senior pitch, both sides played some impressive and expansive Rugby. With Rumney going two tries up, the Gwernyfed youngsters fought back with tries from Lloyd Powell. Harri Saunders Jones and on the stroke of time Ryan Jones sped in for a try to draw the game level but it was the away side who went away with the spoils as per cup rules in a 17 all scoreline.

Coach Geraint Skyrme viewed that it was one of the best sides his age group had ever played and beamed with delight at his young charges all round team performance.

In the afternoon the Rugby continued as again a large crowd attended a very tight match for the senior ladies side against visiting Ynsybwl. Centre Del Thomas touched down for the only try of the game with the home side running out 8-6 winners.

Local ladies rugby was further boosted in the week when the WRU head of ladies rugby Caroline Spanton met and sanctioned the continuation of the successful Red Kites Summer Girls Rugby Project.

Having been a base for 70 girls to take up the game, the Trefecca Road hub will now see winter training and games go ahead against other hubs at U15s and U18s levels.

Caroline was delighted with the success and thanked all those involved from throughout the region and Gwernyfed looks forward to hosting this exciting new opportunity for local ladies sport.
