LLANDOVERY won the Fosters National Sevens for the third consecutive year when they beat a very good Aberavon 46-21 in the final at Cardiff Arms Park writes Huw S Thomas.

After losing to Pontypridd in the first final of the new competition back in 2013, the Drovers have now gone 12 games without defeat, playing an expansive and exciting brand of rugby that has made them an outstanding side to watch.

True to the philosophy of the club and its coaches – Euros Evans, Simon Davies and Gareth Potter – they showed adventure and invention throughout the very long day and were very popular winners.

They were occasionally threatened but the pace of their runners Lee Rees, Aaron Warren and Rhodri Davies, the control of fly half Jack Maynard and the all round sevens expertise of the three main forwards in Aron Evans, Richard Rees and Rhodri Jones proved too much for Bedwas, Bridgend, Cross Keys and finally Aberavon.

"A great day for the club," remarked the club President Handel Davies, "and another trophy to stand alongside the Swalec Cup we won back in May.

"The boys love their sevens and we as a club put great store on the skills of the sevens game in developing talent. The prize money (£5000) will also come in handy through the very busy season ahead," smiled the excited Davies.

In the opening game the dashing and brilliant Rhodri Davies – a product of Ysgol Preseli and Crymych Youth - grabbed a brace of tries with his electric pace off the mark and long striding wing Warren got another in a 19-7 won over Bedwas.

The increasingly confident Drovers upped the pace appreciably against Bridgend, running in four tries without reply in the 28-0 win, Davies, Lee Rees, the North Walian Evans and Shaun Pearce crossing.

The bobby dazzling Rees was the key man in the 28-14 win over Cross Keys in the semi final, running in two tries with his dodging darting running, the others coming from Davies and Evans.

And so to the final and Aberavon who made a real fist of the game with tries from Steff Williams, Nathan Brown and the very quick Mike Wilson matching two Maynard touchdowns and one from Warren.

It made it 21-21 but Llandovery then confirmed their class and composure by adding four more unanswered tries through Warren, Evans and replacements Pearce and South African Lex Botha.
