LLANDOVERY’S game at Bedwas was called off just before the 2.30pm kick off with the pitch holding standing water writes Huw S Thomas.

All but one of the other Premiership games were called off but there was an important result at Rodney Parade where Newport beat Bridgend 30-16.

Newport’s win not only took them to the top of the table but it relegated the Drovers to fourth and out of the play-off spot behind the Black and Ambers, Pontypridd and Ebbw Vale.

It leaves the West Walians with a very tough run-in.

They have six games remaining – two at home to Aberavon and Newport, four away at Bedwas, Neath, Carmarthen Quins and Cardiff – and will probably need to win at least four of those games to qualify for a play off spot.

They are level on 51 points with Ebbw Vale and Aberavon who have played the same number of games – 16 - but have played one more game than leaders Newport and second placed Pontypridd and three more than Cross Keys.

"We need to win our next Premiership game against Aberavon at Church Bank on March 5” said coach Euros Evans “ or we will leave ourselves a mountain to climb."

Attention turns to the Swalec Cup this Saturday when Championship side Newbridge are the visitors to Church Bank in a second round tie postponed from three weeks ago.

A win would ensure a quarter final tie away to either Newcastle Emlyn or Ebbw Vale.
