Builth Wells 7 Maesteg Harlequins 20

Builth Wells found themselves 13-0 down after 20 minutes as Maesteg Quins ran in two tries and kicked a penalty in a frantic start to this League 1 West Central fixture at the Groe.

Defensive errors and poor discipline from the Bulls at the breakdown had cost the home side.

After the opening salvo Builth held their own and finished the half pressing towards the Maesteg line but failed to capitalise due to a lack of accuracy at the set-piece.

At the beginning of the second half indiscipline once again raised its head, allowing Maesteg to run in a third try, which was converted to make it 20-0.

This seemed to wake the Bulls up and they managed to gain good field possession which resulted in substitute Rob Lloyd scoring a fantastic try after some clever play by the Bulls’ backline. Lloyd also converted.

The Bulls finished the match the stronger team and threatened to score more points, but lacked accuracy and composure at vital times.

After the game, club head coach Nick Howells said: "We now need to take a look at ourselves and be honest this week in training. This team can beat any team in our league, but they have to believe in themselves and the system the coaches are trying to put to them."

Defeat leaves Builth, who’ve won just three games all season in 10th place in the table on 18 points, six points clear of bottom club Cwmllynfell.

Builth will have the chance to put distance between them and Kenfig Hill on Saturday when they visit the club who are in 11th place - just a point behind the Bulls.
