The Red Kites Girls Rugby Hub marked a significant milestone on Saturday as players, families, volunteers, coaches, sponsors and former members came together at Gwernyfed RFC to celebrate the club’s 10th anniversary.
What began in 2016 with a small group of girls wanting the opportunity to play rugby has grown into one of the area’s most successful and welcoming girls’ rugby hubs. Over the past decade, hundreds of girls have pulled on the Red Kites shirt, building lifelong friendships, developing confidence and representing their communities with pride.

Former players returned to celebrate alongside current members, highlighting the strong family spirit that has become the heart of the club. The celebrations included a Q&A session and awards presented by Tilly Vucaj and Shanelle Williams, who both started their rugby journey with the Red Kites and have gone on to earn Welsh honours, with Tilly making her debut in the recent Women’s Rugby World Cup.

Special recognition was also given to the dedicated coaches, managers, committee members and volunteers whose commitment has helped shape the club over the last decade. Their countless hours of hard work have enabled generations of girls to enjoy rugby in a safe, supportive and inclusive environment. None of this would have been possible without the vision of Ceri and Jan Morgan, who founded the club when there was nowhere local for their daughter to play rugby.
Throughout the last 10 years, Red Kites players have gone on to represent county, regional and national pathway programmes, and this year saw players from the under-10s, under-12s and under-16s represent Powys at county level.
As the Red Kites enter their second decade, the focus remains the same: providing every girl with the opportunity to play rugby, make friends and reach her full potential.
