THE recent Red Kites festival of girls rugby at Trefecca Road, Talgarth, welcomed teams from clusters across South and East Wales with Rugby Jesters from Blaenau Gwent and Chargers from Caerphilly in the Dragons region and Rugby Miners from the Rhondda (Taff) and Timbers from the Cynon Valley in the Blues region all taking part.
Bathed in glorious sunshine with a light breeze to keep both players and spectators cool the pitches were ablaze with colour and action as girls aged six through to 15 enjoyed the day’s sport.
A range of playing formats were on show as girls demonstrated fantastic skills in a fun environment.
Red Kites cluster lead Ceri Morgan said: “It was great to see cluster teams from the Blues and Dragons region come together at our festival this year for the first time as an East Wales cluster and we witnessed a real spectacle of rugby across the ages with some hard-fought competitive games in the older age-groups.
“We are grateful for the support of the volunteer coaches, team managers and referees and for our financial sponsors without whom the festival couldn’t happen.”
The Red Kites continue to attract girls wanting to try out rugby with around 20 new girls having joined the cluster this season. Training takes place at 6pm on Friday evenings and anyone is welcome to come to the pitches at Trefecca Road to try it out.
The under18s girls also train weekly and are looking for teams and fixtures to play.
