On Saturday Crickhowell met Trefil RFC in the first round of the new WRU National Division Five Cup, triumphing 40-5 after a flurry of second half tries, writes Mal Powell.

The first half turned out to be rather a lacklustre affair as each side sought to gain the upper hand. It was not until late in the first half that wing Ieuan Miles broke the deadlock after full-back Harry Summers made a break and slick passing by Tom Keane and Osian Jones saw Miles get the ball and cut inside to touch down with Lewis Evans adding the conversion.

Not to be outdone, however, Trefil struck back from a well-worked line out in the Crick 22. The half-time scoreboard showed 7-5.

In the second-half, the home side got into their stride and the jinking running of Summers resulted in him scoring a brace of tries with Evans converting both.

Now with a comfortable lead, it was the turn of Robert Morris to break out and cross the whitewash following a series of skilful passes.

With the pack, as usual, working hard to secure possession, Summers was again released to gain his hat-trick. Soon afterwards, hooker Ed Jones made a break and passed to Ieuan Miles who sprinted away but got caught just short of the try-line. Luckily, mobile prop Sion Windebank was on hand in close support to receive the pass and crash over. Outside-half Evans converted four of the five second-half tries.

Trefil manfully stuck to their guns and never let their heads drop but couldn’t match the Parc Broyd outfit on his occasion.

The game was marred as an ambulance had to be summoned for hooker Aaron Horne following a clash of heads. Praise must be given to Alun Tandy and the others who tended to the player and also the rapid response of the ambulance service and the consideration shown by the Trefil team. We wish Aaron a speedy recovery.

The next fixture in the cup is at the end of October when Trevethin RFC visit Parc Broyd.

Meanwhile, league action continues this Saturday, September 24. with an away fixture at Hollybush RFC at NP12 0SG.
