Brecon 73 Llanharan 7
WRU Plate Round 2
BRECON scored 11 tries for the second successive Saturday but this time did so in less than 80 minutes.
With a rampant Brecon threatening to run up a big cricket score over visitors Llanharan the referee blew the full time whistle about halfway through the second half.
Once one of the more successful junior clubs in Wales the Dairy Men, who have competed in the second tier of Welsh rugby, travelled for this round two WRU Plate fixture with just 15 players.
Things got worse for the Division 2 East Central side, who were facing higher level opposition in the form of Brecon from Division 1 East, when they lost their hooker in the first half. That meant most of the game would be played with uncontested scrums.
Llanharan’s only response was an excellent try on the stroke of half time.
Their outside half, who was forced to operate off the back foot for most of the game, looked an accomplished player.
He initiated a move from inside his half and both finished it off and scored the conversion.
But all hope was lost in the second after the visitors, who were already down to 14, lost a further player through injury and the referee took mercy on the 13 men.
The hosts had been dominant from the start however scoring their first try after four minutes through flanker Ioan Edwards.
Gari Davies, making his first start of the season in place of the rested Dean Gunter, converted nine of the tries for an individual 18 point haul and slotted in well at outside half to marshall the dangerous backline.
But it was Brecon’s forwards who did the damage early on. Second row Andrew Hosie crashed over for the second try just four minutes after the first to finish a move that featured a behind the back pass from scrum half Geraint Workman.
Hooker Elgan Lewis and prop Richie Davies also touched down in a dominant and dangerous display by the Brecon pack.
The backs took over to score the remaining seven tried. Fullback Jake Crockett followed up last week’s hat-trick with another three touchdowns.
Centres Sam Campbell and Cameron Gardener and Workman also got their names on the scoresheet.
Unbeaten Brecon now have a fortnight to prepare for their next league fixture and what will be a far more challenging prospect as they travel to take on table toppers, Brynmawr, who also boast a 100% record, on Saturday, November 10.
In the WRU Bowl Gwernyfed travelled to the outskirts of Cardiff to take on Pentyrch.
The Green and Blacks had lost their home league fixtures against Pentyrch the previous week 15-44 but despite a narrow margin it was the hosts who again triumphed winning 17-7.
