THE veterans final of Wales’ annual beach rugby tournament was contested by two sides from landlocked Breconshire – with Ystradgynlais taking the honours.

The Ystradgynlais over 35s, who included former Llanelli and Wales international Vernon Cooper, ran out winners at Beach Rugby Wales touch rugby tournament on the sand in Swansea, overcoming a Brecon representative side in Saturday’s final.

The ageing Blues side were able to run out victorious agains Risca, Hirwaun and Crawley at the group stage.

Impressively doing it with speed of hand and a solid defence that didn’t concede a try all day.

The final was an all Powys affair with Ystradgynlais facing off against the Brecon team. A very competitive final in horrendous weather saw the old Blues of Ystrad winning in the dying seconds thanks to a Richard Lougher try to sound of thunder and lightning.

Captain Huw Thomas said: “It was lovely to play with so many good friends and adding more rugby memories and trophies to the many, many we have created and won over the last few decades.”
