Brecon Corries crashed to a 7-1 defeat at league leaders, Caerphilly Athletic in the Ardal League South East, writes Paul Worts. After ending 2025 with a seven match unbeaten run, the Christmas break came at the wrong time for the Corries who have now failed to win in four matches since the turn of the year.

Arron Hill and Jason Gardiner gave Caerphilly a two goal interval lead and three goals in seven minutes just before the hour mark meant it was game over. Richard Greaves with a brace and Drew Perrett were the Caerphilly marksmen. Iwan John increased the lead again before Corey Evans pulled one back for Brecon Corries from the penalty spot with his first goal of the season after brother, Craig was brought down in the box. But Caerphilly deservedly had the last word with John netting his second to leave the league leaders in seventh heaven with a dominant win, and three points to match it.

Caerphilly hold a five point lead at the top of Ardal League South East, but second placed Goytre have four games in hand. Goytre won 6-1 at Risca United with Chris Ham bagging four of the goals, including two from the penalty spot. They will be looking to make it a title race with their games in hand.

Corries, who have slipped to seventh in the league table, are at home against Chepstow Town at the weekend for a 2pm kick off, but the Brecon team does have games in hand on the two sides immediately above them.

After recent postponements due to the weather, manager, Damien Daniels is hoping Corries can put a run of good performances together and he should be boosted with both Joel Evans and Jack Biggs nearing their returns to the pitch after suffering with their injuries.
