DURING the last week of the summer term, Builth Wells High School added Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life to their timetable for the fourth year running.

Shortly before its name-change to Ysgol Calon Cymru, Builth Wells High School hosted a special event on The Groe on Tuesday, July 17 as part of Race for Life’s schools’ programme.

Nearly 400 youngsters aged from 11 to 17 years old, joined forces with parents, teachers and governors of the school, to take on cancer and walked, jogged or ran 5K in aid of Cancer Research UK’s life-saving work. Ionwen Spowage, head teacher at Ysgol Calon Cymru, said: “Race for Life is a great addition to the school timetable. We thoroughly enjoyed taking part.

“The whole school supported the event and so it was a real team effort and a great day out for governors, parents, pupils and staff, all whilst raising money for a seriously good cause.

“Most of us know someone who has been touched by cancer and we all had our own special reasons for taking part and wanting to help more people survive.

“I am delighted to announce that BWHS and our community raised a staggering £2,041.49.”

Recently the school’s head boy and head girl, Steffan Towns and Caitlin Mills, presented a cheque for the amount raised to Caroline Walsh who is Builth Wells Cancer Research UK treasurer.

Mrs Spowage added: “Over the last four years, our school community has helped raise over £10,000 for this worthy cause.

“We look forward to building on this success as we move forward with Ysgol Calon Cymru.”
