A SIX figure investment planned for Brecon Corries could be the springboard to launch the club into the Welsh Premier League.

That's the claim from Chairman Barry Jones as the club unveils plans to redevelop its Rich Field home.

The ambitious side, which currently plays in the South Wales FA Senior League - a whole four division below Welsh football's top flight - plans to spend at least £150,000 developing the Rich Field.

Chairman Barry Jones said: "Historically we were one of the biggest clubs in Wales.

"It begins with having facilities of a suitable standard though and this could be the first step in Brecon Corries becoming a Welsh Premier League club."

The proposals, which must win planning approval from the Brecon Beacons National Park, involve building a new grandstand which would include a large function room which will be available for hire to community groups. It is also planned to include a kitchen and bar facilities.

Plans show a large glass fronted 'executive style' box, a viewing pavilion - covering a seated stand for supporters, looking out onto the Rich Filed pitch and a first floor 'viewing' terrace.

The new stand will replace the existing grandstand. It is unclear whether the current proposals meet Welsh Premier League ground criteria.

The club's former town centre clubhouse, in Lion Street, was sold at auction in 2011 but was run separately to the football club, which did not profit from its sale.

The Lion Street clubhouse was opened by then Swansea City manager John Toshack in Septmeber 1978 - on the same day he signed former Liverpool teammate Ian Callaghan to the then Football League division three table toppers.

Tosh remarked at the time it would't be long before the Corries would face the Swans, who at the time fielded their reserve side in the Welsh League.
