Here is the third part of three of our look back at major sporting events last year, 2021. This final part looks at months September through to December.

September: Youngster Tristan storms to maiden national title From:

In September, 15-year-old Tristan Cumberland became the Welsh Aquathlon Champion at Barry Island.

Representing Brecon Athletics Club, Tristan was second out of the water following a 750m open water swim around Whitmore Bay.

After the swim, there was a five kilometre run, where Tristan broke away from the pack and into the lead. Tristan won by over three minutes from the second place athlete.

The championship was originally due to take place in Monmouth on July 4th, but with the relaxation of covid restricitions being delayed, all parties agreed to move the event.

There was even more success for Brecon athletes with under-17 athlete, Dan Ricketts. Dan recorded his personal best of 61.88 seconds for the 400m hurdles, an event that he only took up in July.

Along with Dan, fellow athlete, John Bennett also represented Brecon in the Schools International Athletics Board home international in Derby. John had been nursing an achilles injury in the run up to the event, but still took part with a respectable 1.72m high jump and a 15.18 seconds performance in the 100m hurdles.

October: Brecon claim victory over local rivals Builth

October saw two Breconshire rivals in Brecon and Builth Wells lock horns at Parc de Pugh.

Over 500 people turned out to watch the local rivals. The game was highly anticipated as the teams have not crossed paths in recent years.

Brecon Back Row, Davy Herdman, led the team out in his final game for Brecon after many seasons in the starting squad. The game also played a huge part in which team would progress in the WRU National Plate Competition. As well as this, the pressure was piled on top of Brecon as in the last fixture at Builth, Builth came out on top.

With the pressure ramped up and large crowd in attendance, Brecon didn’t disappoint the home faithfuls and beat Builth convincingly, 48-8, giving Davy Herdman (pictured - Mark Griffin) a dream send off.

November: Dan’s the man for Brecon!

On November 27, Brecon Phoenix Boxing Club gained a new Welsh Champion in 15-year-old, Dan Pitt.

Dan became the new 80+ Kg Welsh Junior Champion at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff, and was presented his Welsh vest by national coaching lead, Zak Davies.

David Gilbert, lead coach at Brecon Phoenix Boxing Club, said: “This represents the result of incredible hard work and determination by Dan in and out of the gym - helped by his sparring partners and family support.

“The whole club is very proud of his achievement and look forward to seeing where the future takes him and his fellow Brecon Boxers.”

December: Builth topple Corries in eight-goal thriller

The Breconshire Derby between Builth Wells and Brecon Corries took place on Saturday 11th December and it did not disappoint in terms of entertainment.

Builth Wells welcomed MMP with Norman Lloyd Mid Wales League (East) leaders, Brecon to Lant Field.

Aeron Powell opened the scoring for Builth after four minutes, with a strike from the edge of the penalty area. Greg Preece doubled the Bulls’ lead beating Corries’ goalkeeper to the ball following a set piece.

Preece went on to score his second of the game, six minutes after his first goal. He then completed his hat-trick after halftime, taking the ball around Brecon goalkeeper, Declan Gaydon, giving Builth a four-goal cushion.

Builth were then reduced to ten men after Danny Ives picked up his second yellow card.

Despite this, Builth made it five with Greg Preece converting from the penalty spot.

With 15 minutes remaining, Brecon Corries gave Builth a late scare, with two goals in quick succession as they looked to mount a late comeback. In the 80th minute, the Corries’ Craig Evans beat the Builth Keeper with a low free-kick from 25 yards out.

Five minutes from the final whistle, Brecon Corries were awarded a penalty which Builth keeper, James Spooner, saved securing a 5-3 derby-day win for Builth Wells just before Christmas.
