THE all weather track at Tai’r Gwaith Raceway near Ammanford hosted the Mid Wales & Borders race.

The card which consisted of all straight races, was planned around the two premier races of the day: the STAGBI mares race designed to highlight the future broodmares of the British Standardbred; and the Free For All for the top horses in the group.

In the Grade B race, Ithony Gypsy (Jones, Llanbister) came in second while in division two saw C U Choteau (Thomas Llanbister) secure her promotion to the Grade A.

Division three was won by the lovely Habberley Haste driven by Andrew Hardwick and owned by Ken Lloyd, New Radnor with the grey Precious Cargo (Gwatkin, Evenjobb) in second and Fold The Notes (Perks, Presteigne) in third.

Meadowland Hasty (Price Brecon) lived up to his name in the first Grade A race, he certainly didn’t hang about as he clocked up the fastest time of the day in 1.58.6. Scooby’s Dream (Moore, Llangorse) finished in second while Ithon Inmate (Price, Brecon) came third in division two.

In the Nursery Race, Immortal Jackpot (Williams Brecon) came second with Hello Vera (Lloyds, Painscastle) in third. It looks like Cool Ice (Gethin, Gilwern) is one to look out for next season as she finished ahead of the improving Ithon JR (Thomas, Llanbister).

Two Baby Novice races followed and in the first division Dernol Bonus (Lloyds, Painscastle) and Self Pozest (Hussey, Merthyr) had to share third Prize. In the second division it was Pendragon (Powell Merthyr Cynog) who came third.

The Six Furlong Dash is always popular and with 18 entries it was divided into two races.

In the first division it was Fold The Notes (Perks, Presteigne) who is somewhat variable put his best foot forward to come first.

The STAGBI mares race sponsored by the Standardbred breed society of GB & Ireland is always a race to look forward to with C U Choteau (Thomas, Llanbister) coming in second.

The Free For All was the highlight of the meeting and it did not disappoint.

It was won by the Scintillating Ithon Inmate (Price, Brecon) piloted by usual partner Derek Pritchard who stormed home in 1:58.7 with Stablemate Meadowland Hasty (Price, Brecon) and Mark Evans just behind in second.

In the consolation race, Valley Jasper (Lloyd, New Radnor) came second.

This week the season continues with demonstration racing at Kington Show while Beulah Show hosts racing from 4pm on Saturday September 12.
