Six months after its launch in Brecon, the 5k Your Way: Move Against Cancer group is going from strength to strength.
The initiative, which meets alongside the Y Promenâd parkrun on the last Saturday of every month, has quickly become a welcoming and supportive space for people affected by cancer.
Whether walking, jogging, running, cheering, or volunteering, participants have embraced the opportunity to connect, stay active, and support one another.
The group was founded by a team of dedicated volunteers, now serving as 5K Your Way (5KYW) ambassadors, who wanted to create a space for peer support through physical activity. In partnership with the MOVE Against Cancer charity, their efforts have fostered a vibrant and growing community in Brecon.
“The 5K Your Way initiative is open to anyone impacted by cancer: those living with or beyond cancer, healthcare professionals, family and friends, and those who have lost someone to cancer,” say the ambassadors.
“We’ve been thrilled by the response and the sense of community that’s developed over the past six months. Everyone is welcome to join us - do as much or as little as you like!”
Participants meet at 9am by the Boathouse on The Promenade, Brecon (LD3 9LL) – just look out for the blue flag.
Exercise is widely recognised as a powerful tool for improving well-being and supporting health outcomes both during and after cancer treatment.
MOVE Against Cancer Charity co-founder and oncologist, Lucy Gossage, describes it as “arguably the most under-used ‘wonder drug’ in the NHS.”
