The search for 96-year-old Rita has entered its sixth day with emergency services showing no sign of reducing their efforts to find the Brecon pensioner.

Dyfed-Powys Police and Brecon Mountain Rescue Team have searched the town and its surrounding areas tirelessly for Rita who was last seen at 10.20am on Saturday.

It is understood that Brecon MRT have set up an incident room at the 1st Brecon Scout Group Hut on Scout Lane in the town as they continue to search for Rita.

The team has posted a couple of recent updates to their social media about their involvement in the search, including a thank you to residents for allowing them access to private properties and providing refreshment.

On Monday, February 28, a Brecon MRT spokesperson said: “Brecon Mountain Rescue Team was called this weekend to search for a missing 96 year old from Brecon. The search was undertaken throughout Saturday and Sunday alongside Dyfed-Powys Police, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service , National Police Air Service HQ and Search and Rescue Dog Association South Wales.

“Unfortunately the lady has not yet been found. Further searching is planned this week and the team is liaising closely with the police.

“Please contact the police by calling 101 if you have any information on the missing lady. We would like to thank the local community for their support in allowing search teams access to their property and providing refreshments for the search team members.”

The group have since posted another update on their search efforts with a reminder to residents helping the search to “stay safe” around the river banks.

The team has so far deployed specialist Swiftwater rescue search teams, kayak teams, land search teams and drone teams in the ongoing search

The voluntary group have also joined the call by Dyfed-Powys Police for residents to check any CCTV or camera door bell systems to see if there is any footage of Rita.

In a Facebook post yesterday, March 2, a Brecon MRT spokesperson said: “We ask the members of the public check their gardens and outbuildings anywhere in the town and if they have CCTV please ring 101 and let Dyfed Powys Police know if you have any footage from Saturday morning.

“We would also encourage members of the public to stay away from riverbanks and while we appreciate people want to help it is important that everybody stays safe.”

Dyfed-Powys Police have released an updated photo of Rita from the family which shows the 96-year-old wearing the jacket which she is thought to have been wearing when she went missing.

The Brecon woman may be wearing a fleece jumper with a leaf design and is thought to be travelling on foot.

In an update yesterday - Tuesday, March 2 - a force spokesperson said: “Members of the public will see an increased police presence in Brecon Town today as searches continue.

“We are supporting Rita’s family with specially trained officers during this very difficult time and are appealing for anyone with any information to come forward.”

The town’s community has come together in the last week to help find Rita, with hundreds of comments online asking for updates and offering help with the search.

A new Facebook page has been set up called LET’S FIND RITA to help collaborate information and to assist with the search effort.
