Mountain rescuers took to the Brecon Beacons after dark to help hikers who had become lost while on an evening walk.

Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team were called by Dyfed-Powys Police to help the two hill walkers who realised they had strayed from their route along the Neuadd circuit which runs between Neuadd Reservoir and Pen y Fan.

As night started to cover the Brecon Beacons, the walkers called for help and were located in the Nant Crew area of the Beacons thanks to phone finder technology.

A Central Beacons MRT spokesperson posted about the Monday evening callout to the team’s Facebook page after the incident on January 17.

They said: “Our sixth callout of the year was shortly before 6pm this evening (Monday) when we were called by Heddlu Dyfed-Powys Police to help two hillwalkers who’d found themselves off their intended route of the Neuadd circuit. Once darkness set in, they did the right thing and called for help.

“Thankfully they had phone signal and using #PhoneFind technology with one of our Incident Controllers taking details from them, we soon established they were in the Nant Crew valley of the Brecon Beacons.

“Our first response hill team were soon on the mountain heading to where we thought the couple were, after a short time searching we could see their torchlight.”

While the lost couple were reportedly cold and tired, they were unharmed and only required some warmth and energy before they were assisted off the mountain.

The spokesperson said: “Once we were with the couple our medic carried out an assessment of their condition, they were cold and tired yet thankfully uninjured. After warming them, giving food and drink, we carefully escorted them off the mountain.

“At our control vehicle they were given a warm cuppa before being reunited with their car.

“A job well done, we were back home and at our base about 9.30pm.”

The Central Beacons MRT is a voluntary group who are on-call 24 hours a day, every day.

The team relies on donations from the public so that it can continue to provide it’s invaluable service to the Brecon Beacons.
