A murder investigation has been launched after a man died following an incident in Welshpool town centre during the early hours of Sunday morning.

Dyfed-Powys Police said officers were called to Church Street at 1:16am on Sunday, June 28, following reports that a man had been injured.

Emergency services attended the scene, but despite the efforts of paramedics, the 49-year-old man died.

The victim's next of kin have been informed.

A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.

Detectives from the force's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Major Crime Team are leading the investigation, with officers expected to maintain a visible presence in the town centre over the coming days.

Police have identified a key timeframe between 12:45am and 1:15am and are appealing for information from anyone who was in the area.

They are particularly keen to hear from anyone who witnessed a disturbance in or around Church Street during that period, anyone with mobile phone, video or dashcam footage of a disturbance or those involved, anyone who was present on Church Street between those times, or anyone who can identify other people who were at the location.
