POLICE have made an arrest after a glass donation box at Brecon Cathedral was smashed on Sunday.

The glass box was damaged at around 5.30pm on Sunday - shortly after the holy site’s Choral Evensong service.

Dyfed-Powys Police said said it has since arrested a 38-year-old man from the Brecon area on suspicion of attempted theft, criminal damage and going equipped to steal. He has been bailed pending further inquiries.

Richard Williams, the facilities manager at the cathedral, said it had taken cathedral staff five hours to remove and replace the glass on Monday.

Mr Williams said the glass has been replaced with laminated glass which is harder to smash. The cathedral also has a CCTV system.

He said the donation box has been targeted on a number of previous occasions.

Mr Williams said: "It has happened about four or five times in the last 10 years. It is not something you would expect in a cathedral.

"Obviously the upkeep of the cathedral is very, very expensive and we run at an annual loss. It is very disappointing.

"We didn’t have a box for donations to be put in and that’s what we rely on."
