A GROUP of gardeners from Talgarth are entering the Cultivation Street competition after decorating Talgarth with flowers and starting a community garden along the riverbank.

The group, Grow For Talgarth, is part of the Talgarth and District Regeneration project, which was started by residents Rosy Williams, Helen Roome, Gaynor Weaver and Jayne Millman and now has regular volunteers ranging in age from 10 to 65.

The group have so far grown a mix of fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers in raised beds and have had donations of cash, topsoil, tools, plants and planters from the local community.

The raised beds include signs which tell the community what they are able to eat and when is the right time to harvest vegetables. The advantage of the raised beds is that they allow more nutrition for the plants.

Rosy Williams said: “We started this mainly to create community spirit.

“It’s really to pull the town together so that we can all start to

look after the town together more.”

Cultivation Street is a competition for people who are committing to looking after their streets. The winners will receive £10,000 worth of National Garden Gift vouchers.
