A 20-year-old man has died after he "got into difficulty" while swimming near waterfalls in the Glynneath area.

Ambulance, fire and police crews attended the man, who had been swimming in the water at Pontneddfechan, at around 4.40pm on Wednesday, July 24.

The man, who was from Bridgend, died the following day while he was the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

Dyfed-Powys Police said: "We received a report of a man in difficulty at Pontneathvaughan, Glynneath, on Wednesday, July 24.

"Police attended along with the fire service and paramedics."

The spokeswoman also said that there are no suspicious circumstances and the man’s next of kin and HM Coroner have been made aware.

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “We were called to reports of a person needing medical assistance near Glynneath.

"We responded with one ambulance, a crew of our community first responders, four vehicles of our hazardous area response team, and we were supported by Wales Air Ambulance and the fire and rescue service.

“One patient was transported by road ambulance to University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.”

The inquest into the man’s death has not yet been opened.
