The Abbeyfield Movement is celebrating 70 years of caring for and supporting older people through a wide range of sheltered housing. It is a major provider, active in many countries since its humble beginnings in 1956.

Abbeyfield Brecon, which is also celebrating an important 30th anniversary this year, joined the international celebrations by holding a cheese and wine evening on July 11. The event was attended by residents, their families, staff, past and present trustees, and longstanding friends and contractors.

The event was hosted in style by House Manager Emma Debenham in a garden marquee, which provided more than adequate protection from the hot weather. Musical entertainment was available throughout the evening.

The evening was introduced by Mayor of Brecon Cllr Sian Drinan and Chair of Trustees Poppy Weston, who provided some historical background on Abbeyfield nationally.

Emma would like to thank everyone involved in preparing and helping with the event. She was delighted to demonstrate how the independent living options provided by Abbeyfield give residents a sense of wellbeing in a safe and comfortable environment, without the worries of managing their own housing chores.

The evening was a great success, enjoyed by all attendees, who expressed their thanks and compliments to everyone involved. Some even asked: “Can we celebrate 75 years soon too?”
