AFTER her daughter was diagnosed with type one diabetes Abercraf’s Andrea Burdett is planning to take steps to help fund a cure.

Andrea’s daughter Miranda was diagnosed with the disease at the age of 14 after surgery for scoliosis which is curvature of the spine.

Former probation officer Andrea said: "Call it mother’s intuition, but I became concerned about her symptoms. I thought she had a urine infection but persuaded the staff at the health care centre to test for type one diabetes there and then, which showed her blood glucose levels were sky high."

Andrea is taking part of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s (JDRF) One Walk on Sunday September 4 from Cardiff Metropolitan University and will see hundreds of people unite to support the charity.

Andrea said: “I’m looking forward to the One Walk because it is the first time I have taken part in a fundraising event of this kind.”

Miranda now works for the JDRF and Andrea said: "Having completed her degree, and a Masters in Marketing. Miranda is now employed as Regional Fundraiser for Wales for JDRF and I hope as many people as possible will participate in the One Walk Cardiff to help raise vital funds for research into the condition. Our miniature dachshund, Otis, will be walking with me."

Type 1 diabetes affects about 400,000 people in the UK, 29,000 of them children. It cannot be prevented, and is not linked to lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise.

People who live with it rely on multiple insulin injections or pump infusions every day to stay alive, until a cure s found. JDRF exists to find this cure by supporting research into the condition.

The One Walk is a family day to remember, with people of all ages walking, talking and having some fun. Together, with the JDRF, it is hoped that the money made will be a move closer to finding the cure for type one diabetes.

Lydia Warrilow, Head of Regional Fundraising at JDRF, said: "Each person who signs up to participate in the One Walk is a hero and we are so thankful.

"The One Walk is always a very successful event, enjoyed not just by JDRF supporters in the UK, but in different continents around the world."
