AFFORDABLE housing could be built on the site of Hay-on-Wye Community Centre.

The centre is set to be demolished and the Wales and West Housing Association is said to be interested in developing the site for affordable homes.

Rural housing enabler Susie Abson, said Powys County Council, which owns the site, has held discussions with social housing associations: "I wanted the community centre site to be considered for affordable housing otherwise an opportunity for good quality affordable homes for people in Hay would be missed.

"Wales and West Housing Association is interested in delivering some innovative projects in the area."

Hay Affordable Housing Group will have a stand at the Hay Spring Fair on Saturday, April 12, where community housing will form a key topic, together with transport and energy.

A map of Hay will be available on which fair goers can indicate where they would like to see community housing built.

The free event at Hay Castle from 10am to 5pm will include a discussion at 2.15pm, Housing – room to grow, room to live, chaired by Tim Organ from Hay Transition Town and the Hay Affordable Housing Group, on the subject of affordable, sustainable housing.

He will be talking to Jonathan Hines from Herefordshire sustainable housing company, Archihaus, and Paul Taylor from sustainability experts, Cwm Harry.
