A debate on AI, its usage, its threats and its perceived successes and problems is coming to Hay-on-Wye.

Hay Talks: AI Is The Biggest Threat Facing Humanity will come to The Globe at Hay on the 2nd of December, promising a thought provoking evening of debate exploring the motion: AI is the biggest threat facing humanity.

Bringing together four expert speakers, the event will examine whether AI represents an unprecedented danger to human creativity, intelligence and our future — or whether its potential to enhance our abilities and solve some of the world's greatest challenges outweighs the risks.

From the future of art, music and writing to the impact of AI on human thinking, education and employment, those in attendance will question what happens when machines begin to perform tasks once considered uniquely human. There will also be exploration of the environmental cost of AI, asking whether the energy and resources required to power its development can be justified by the benefits it might bring.

There will also be chance for audience Q&A.

Recently, AI has been in the media after a top safety researcher at AI safety and research company Anthropic warned AI is advancing with such speed he believes there is a greater than 10% chance it "could kill all humans" within the next decade. Meanwhile, King Charles warned AI executives of the "existential dangers" posed by the technology falling into the wrong hands, while at a summit he had convened at Dumfries House in Ayrshire to discuss how the tech can be used to benefit society.
