Powys is braced for severe weather and possible flooding this weekend.

Parts of Mid Wales could see up to 100mm of rain fall in under two days, warns the Met Office, as the country braces for the impact of Storm Alex.

The Met Office has issued amber weather warnings for heavy rain across large parts of Wales, in place from midnight on Saturday morning to 6am on Sunday.

Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Nick Silkstone, said: “The Met Office has issued a rain warning covering large parts of the country over the weekend and we’re urging people to keep a close eye on the weather forecast and warnings during this spell of disruptive weather.”

The forecast heavy rainfall is likely to lead to significant impacts from flooding, such as enhanced risk of landslides along with very difficult driving conditions.

RAC Breakdown spokesperson Rod Dennis said: “Heavy rain will make road conditions miserable if not downright dangerous for drivers this weekend, and they’ll need to be prepared for an ugly mix of surface spray, gusty winds and more than likely some disruption on the roads.

“Floods are also a possibility so drivers should remember never to attempt to drive through water unless they know for sure that it’s shallow enough. For drivers who are unlucky enough to breakdown in the horrid conditions, our patrols will be working around the clock to get them moving again.”

Natural Resource Wales has included Powys on a list of 16 counties in Wales at "medium risk" of flooding on Saturday and Sunday, meaning that flooding is expected, and urging people to be prepared.

Earlier this year, Storm Ciara and Storm Dennis brought strong winds and rainfall which caused severe flooding across areas of the UK, including Brecon and Radnorshire.
