Police are appealing for witnesses after a man died when his car crashed into a tree and caught fire around lunchtime on Saturday.

The driver of the car, a 31-year-old man from North Yorkshire, died at the scene and the passenger sustained serious injuries following the crash just south of Llanwrtyd Wells.

The blue Vauxhall VX220, which is thought to have been traveling as part of a convoy, was the only vehicle involved in the collision on the A483, between Llandovery Road and Sugar Loaf train station, at around 12.50pm.

A Dyfed-Powys Police spokeswoman said: “Sadly, the driver passed away at the scene whilst the passenger sustained serious injuries and remains in hospital at this time.

“It is believed that the vehicle was traveling in convoy with four other vehicles who all remained at the scene and are assisting police with the investigation.”

The main road was closed for more than six hours, not reopening until after 7pm.

Other emergency services attended the accident including the air ambulance and the fire service.

Fire crews from Llanwrtyd and Llandovery extinguished the blaze and helped the driver and the passenger.

A Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “Crews extinguished the vehicle fire and attended to two casualties at the scene.

“One hose reel jet and small tools were used. The scene was subsequently handed to Dyfed-Powys Police. Crews lefts the scene at 2.32pm.”
