Builth Wells Rotary Club, working in conjunction with Powys County Council, has donated and planted an apple tree in a newly designated orchard.
The ‘James Grieve’ apple tree will eventually produce a savoury, juicy apple with strong acidity at first, which then mellows as the fruit matures later in the year. The new orchard, located next to Builth Wells Bowling Green, is on the site of the old tennis courts.
Stephen Butcher, the Countryside and Outdoor Recreation Officer for Brecknockshire, had a vision for an orchard of different varieties of fruit to be created on this space. This will form a community garden where people can wander and be surrounded by the natural beauty of the area, taking opportunity to help themselves to any of the ripened fruit, similar to the Incredible Edible concept.
The orchard will be tended by Powys County Council.
Stephen is keen to develop the land and has suggested that any groups or individuals who would like to promote their clubs or remember loved ones, to contact him at his email: [email protected]
